Mortar for Wall Coating

This application can be prepared with mortar produced on the construction site or with industrialized mortar, for internal and external walls. Mortar prepared onsite provides a more rustic finishing with lower costs. Industrialized mortar produces finer, more uniform finishing.

The steps for preparing and applying each of these materials are the following:

Coating Mortar

Mortar for Internal Areas (prepared onsite)

Materials needed:

Prepare a dry sift mixture with the following materials, using 18-liter cans as measure units:

  • Pó Xadrez in the desired color;
  • 1 can of cement  (25 kg);
  • 2 whitewash cans;
  • 9 cans of medium or fine sand.

For each cement can, add 1,5 kg of Pó Xadrez in the desired color. For obtaining lighter colors, use structural white cement and reduce the quantity of Pó Xadrez. (Picture 1)

Tip: These quantities of cement, sand and whitewash are mere suggestions, for they may be altered according to what is desired for the work.

Yielding: one 50 kg cement package yields about 2 cans of 18 liters each, a sufficient amount for an area of 35 m 2. Such yielding may vary according to the thickness.

Step 1: Prepare a dry mixture with all the materials and the Pó Xadrez specified above, then mix it well until the color is even and free from lumps. (Picture 2)

Step 2: divide this mixture into recipients with the quantity to be used for each extension of the wall on which it is to be applied. Then add water to the mixture in each recipient, mixing well until obtaining an ideal mortar consistency. (Pictures 3 and 4)

Use the same amount of water for all parts to be separated in the recipients.

Step 3: Apply it on the wall using a masonry trowel in upward-downward movements. (Picture 5)

Step 4: Use the ruler for leveling. (Picture 6)

Step 5: Smoothen it with a wooden steel evener for completing the rustic finishing. (Picture 7)

Warning!

Do not add more water to the mortar after it has dried, for this may alter its color and resistance.

Mortar for External Areas (prepared onsite)

Materials needed:

  • Pó Xadrez in the desired color;
  • 1 can of cement;
  • 1 can of whitewash;
  • 6 cans of medium or fine sand.

Follow the same preparation proceeding utilized for internal use mortar.

Please remember that mortar to be exposed to external areas require special care, such as the use of waterproofers.

Industrialized Mortar

Spare the white or gray industrialized mortar and the Pó Xadrez in the following quantities:

For each 20 kg package of industrialized mortar , use up to 250 g of Pó Xadrez in the desired color.

Note: This amount is enough for leaving the mortar with a darker color.

If you prefer lighter colors, reduce the quantity of Pó Xadrez and use white industrialized mortar.

Step 1: prepare a dry mixture with the materials until the color is very even.

Step 2: add water in the quantity indicated by the manufacturer of the mortar for obtaining the ideal consistency.

The mortar is finally ready to be applied!

Note: In the case of industrialized mortar, there is no need to wet the wall for application.
