Painting Whitewash

Materials needed

  •     Pó Xadrez in the desired color;
  •     Hydrated whitewash;
  •     Retainer;
  •     Paint brush or painting roll.

This is a hydrated whitewash-based paint used for coloring and coating masonry surfaces.

Step 1: In a clean recipient, prepare a dry mixture of up to 800 g of Pó Xadrez in the desired color for each 8 kg package of painting whitewash until obtaining an even color. (Pictures 1 and 2)

For obtaining different shades, mix two or three colors of Pó Xadrez. If you want lighter colors, reduce the quantity of Pó Xadrez.

Step 2: Little by little, add the quantity of water recommended by the manufacturer of the painting whitewash. (Picture 3)

Step 3: Add a retainer to improve the paint’s adherence and performance. A liter of white PVA glue may be used as optional use. Mix it well until the color is even. The mixture should look like paint in order to be properly absorbed by the wall without forming a thick layer over the surface. (Picture 4)

Step 4: Before painting, wet the application surface with abundant water to get a better performance and solid paint layers with slow drying.

Step 5: Apply the whitewash mixture with a paint brush or roll in horizontal or vertical movements up to three coatings. Apply the first two coatings in thinner layers for obtaining good adherence, and the second coating should be applied before the first one is finally dry. The last coating should always be the thicker so the final touch can be added. (Pictures 5 and 6)

Note: The surfaces painted with acrylic or latex paints may hamper the adhesive properties of the painting whitewash.

Before applying the mixture, be sure that the wall is clean, without infiltrations of humidity, mold, or dust, to prevent the durability of the painting with whitewash from being affected.

Paintings with whitewash have no coating when wet, so they must only be evaluated after they are completely dry.
